What is a Search Engine..Basics?

Typically the Search Engine Search works by sending out what is called a spider to find as many documents (websites, files online) that has the specific keyword or words that were typed into the search bar of the search engine. Spiders are used to feed the search engines and supply the sites that are being requested in the original search. The reason it is called a spider is because when you type a word in the search engine bar on the say for instance Google.com then the spider goes out and crawls the web and finds the millions and millions of sites in seconds that has the word that you typed in the search bar.

The programmer has designed the system to search for a list of variables and a list of directions that tells the computer what to do with the variables. These variables are noted in the representation of data (meaning documents and text) and or graphics.

The Search Engine Search then uses an algorithm to create the indexes so that the search results are relevant and mean something to you when you search for the keyword or product that you are wanting to know more about. So the term algorithm is a formula or a set of steps that solve a particular situation or problem. It is a set of rules that have a clear place to stop and is programmed in computer languages that are also in different spoken languages as English, Spanish or others. The challenge for programmers is inventing the algorithms that are simple and require as few basic steps possible.

You have by now heard about links. Most basic and complex websites have links to other pages and other websites. So the spider can start almost anywhere and find multiples of pages because of the links. The larger search engines have their own links that work in tandum with the others.

Just a quick note about keywords; in the design of the database by the programmer (database being a spread sheet of a list of variables) and each one identifies a unique record in the database. The trick for the programmers is to make it faster and the records to sort by the fields that are in the Search Engine Search.

Now, another way to talk about the simplicity of the search engines but now understanding the complexity of the programming that drives the systems, is that unless you had the capability of searching the web with the search engines, you would only be able to go to websites with knowing the correct url or web address of the website.

Here is another way to look at the search engines. When you are looking for something on the web- or Internet, you are typing in a word and the documents are gathered by what is called a robot. It initially searches through millions of databases to find the html pages or documents and images.

There are basically three types of search engines: robots (crawlers or spiders) or ones that are powered by human submission (meaning someone submits the sites by hand) and or a combination of both. And, the search engines are looking for the html pages, data in the bases and also by the meta tags that are placed in the website information that is a special HTML tag that gives the Search Engine Search information about the web page.

So the question sometimes is why do different search engines produce different results. For instance, if you are searching on a seo company and you go to google.com and type the keyword seo services for example the results will come up with millions of sites and the first results are paid sponsor ads and there will be ten others on the page of companies that have actually come up before several millions of other sites.

Then if you go to say for instance, yahoo.com or search.com and type in the same keyword seo company, you will get different results. Many times you will get some of the same sites especially if they are good at the seo marketing. But often they will be in different positions and different sites altogether. Why does this happen? Part of the reason is the not all the programming is looking at exactly the same indices and the spiders are not always looking for the same in the databases. And, the most important factor is not all search engines use the same algorithm to search through the indices of the databases. And, remember the algorithm is what the search engine uses to determine the real relevance of the content and information to the search.

Now, one of the challenges that a search engine faces is algorithm scans for the frequency and where the keywords are in the web page. The key is to having the highest frequency with our looking like you are over populating the keyword. The Search Engine Search technology is now looking and discouraging the too many keywords on a page and it can be a detriment rather then positive if you have too many keywords on the page.

The most simple way to say what is a search engine and what does it do? The company has paid programmers to design their search engine to go out and find sites and data for you when you want to know about something. And, the key for you as a business owner or a website owner is to be wise and hire a seo company to do the work for you.
